Yun-Fei Ji’s practice evokes classical Chinese paintings with a contemporary twist. Utilising centuries-old techniques and executed on rice paper in ink and watercolour, Ji’s scrolls unfold to reveal surprising subject matter and unexpected narratives. Ji draws his subjects from historical sources such as the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Boxer Rebellion and the Great Leap Forward. Lending his art as a voice to those who commonly go unheard, he touches upon turbulent political events and issues that are still sensitive in contemporary China. The decision to work in traditional media is an intentionally subversive one – during the Cultural Revolution in China, artists and society favoured Western influences. The active choice to borrow an aesthetic and techniques from traditional Chinese landscape painting has provided Ji with an effective means of conveying his ambivalence regarding authority and critical stance toward the Communist Party.
