MARGARET LENG TAN
TOY PIANO VIRTUOSO
performing The celebrated avant garde pianist and toy piano virtuoso, MARGARET LENG TAN, performs CAGE/NAM-JUNE/FLUXUS in conjunction with the current exhibition, Nam June Paik, at the James Cohan Gallery. Recognized as the pre-eminent interpreter of John Cage's music, Ms. Tan will present a sneak preview of her upcoming performance at the 53rd Venice Biennale's opening celebrations in June.
The program begins with Ms. Tan's homage to Nam June Paik, Toy Piano Drag, followed by three groundbreaking works by Cage; also pieces by Alison Knowles and Dick Higgins, both pioneers in the Fluxus conceptual art movement of the 1960s in which Mr. Paik was a core participant. Knowles, Higgins and Paik all regarded John Cage as their mentor and spiritual father.
Ms. Tan also honors another Fluxus founding member, George Brecht (1926-2008), performing several of his "event scores". The program ends with two works for toys by the Australian-American composer, Erik Griswold, a twenty-first century celebration of Fluxus' playful spirit.
