James Cohan Gallery is pleased to present new works by Beatriz Milhazes in her third solo gallery exhibition. As one of the most celebrated Brazilian artists today, her work explores a myriad of themes including: decorative motifs from embroidery textiles, Arabic tiles and Op Art, Folk Art, the Colonial Baroque, Brazilian carnival, European Modernism, Catholic iconography and pop culture symbols. The profusion and exuberance of the imagery conflate to create the visually arresting paintings, collages, prints and installations for which Milhazes has become well-known.
Opening September 2008, a retrospective exhibition of Milhazes' work will be presented at the Pinacoteca in Sâo Paolo. She will also participate in the first Prospect.1 New Orleans, the largest biennial of international art to be organized in the US running from November 2008 through January 2009. Milhazes has been commissioned to make a new installation work for the Winter Gardens Windows at the World Financial Center in New York City for 2009.
