Trenton Doyle Hancock  PRESS RELEASE

James Cohan Gallery is proud to present Trenton Doyle Hancock's fourth gallery exhibition. In this show, Hancock will present 5 major new paintings, a new set of prints and elements from Cult of Color: Call to Color, a ballet collaboration presented by Ballet Austin in April 2008 for which Hancock provided the story as well as the costume and set design. Hancock continues his saga of the epic battle between the Mounds and the Vegans. In his absurdist allegory, Hancock builds upon styles and references ranging from: Surrealism, comic books and contemporary culture with which he creates work with an array of materials including: paint, collage, and sculpture. By constructing this individual language, Hancock deepens the sense of the personal nature of his on-going narrative.

In 2007, Hancock received the Joyce Alexander Wein Award from the Studio Museum in Harlem for most promising African-American artist of the year. In April 2008, Hancock has a solo show at the Institute for Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania and is included in the American Folk Art Museum's Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger. He has been invited to participate in the exhibition, In the Beginning: Artists Respond to Genesis at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco opening May 2008. He will also participate in the first Prospect.1 New Orleans, the largest biennial of international art to be organized in the US running from November 2008 through January 2009.
